3 Ways to Lead Better NOW: Practical Tips for Stronger Leadership

Why Leadership Matters

You need to lead better.

We all do. Here is 3 ways that we can all level up now.

I’ve been in leadership positions most of my adult life. From business ventures, to leadership college and ministry roles , and consulting multinational NGO’s and Gov agencies… It’s something I’ve seen all sides of. the good the bad and the ugly. I've trained leaders in various cultures, industries from all walks of life. It always shocks me that though the contexts change, people are people. I’ve seen some amazing examples of good leadership and even more examples of bad leadership and the consequences both produce.

I never intended to be a “leader” I was just passionate about helping people. I hated seeing suffering.  I didn't have “natural leadership ability. I stuttered badly growing up. I was abrasive. I think I was just willing to say what many wouldn’t.

So many avoid the responsibility of leadership and I get that. It comes with lots of headaches. But if you care about the cause and the people, you know leadership is the difference between success and failure. John Maxwell famously says,” everything rises and falls on leadership”. I’ve seen that to be 100% facts.

Some of my growth in this area has been intentional, but most of it has been learned the hard way. Through struggle, bad mindsets, spinning my own wheels, and times where I’ve taken three steps back for every one forward.

3 Ways to Lead Better NOW

Here are some things I’ve learned that you can apply to your life today, to lead better this week

  1. Address the problem.

It's not going away on its own. Be brave and have the uncomfortable conversation. Your team and mission will suffer if you don't. I see the most powerful leaders still struggle with this.  Do it in love, seek resolution if possible, but do it. Address the problem TODAY.

  2. Humble yourself.

You’re not that big of a deal. Kill your ego. No one gives a shit. Your team is tired of hearing you pontificate. Ask for more input. Give away more praise. Delegate more authority. You don't have to be the best or smartest. If you do, your potential is capped. Arrogance and insecurity are both rooted in pride. Stop making it about you. Serve. Make it about others. Make it about the team. The customers, the mission. That will change everything.

  3. Be more intentional.

Most leaders I know are high capacity. Strong work ethics. Move fast.  Sharper than average. So they think they can get away with firing from the hip. They just keep moving. That works until doesn’t.  Too many leaders lean on their natural gifts and strengths and want to delegate all their weaknesses. That works until delegation becomes abdication.  They like the hard work that “gets results”  instead of doing the hard work of slowing down to think and plan that could produce even greater results. If they’re great with people, they don't want to be intentional with administration or strategy.  If they’re great with strategy or execution they don't take the time to care about people. Slow down. Be intentional. Think before you speak. Ready. Aim. Fire.

Lead Better Starting Today

These 3 ethics of leadership eat people for lunch. But you can lead better TODAY.

You have to want to be the right kind of leader and want to do right by the people you impact. But you do. I know you do deep down.

I believe in you. Don’t “spin your wheels” stuck in an old way of thinking and operating.
